Unlike many jobs, being an NP benefits the most from the length of time on the job, so when you begin your search, think about where you will be happy to live for many years. Do you love the beach? Is big-city life for you, or do you prefer the relaxed living of a small town? Are you willing to give up your location preference for a bigger salary? Would you rather your job be less stressful even if it means less pay? Do you have strong feelings about areas to raise your children should you have them? These are the questions you should ask yourself before you start looking for that dream job.
I've been in the recruiting end of the nursing business and can help you choose where to look. For instance, there are more NP's searching the internet for new postings of nurse practitioner jobs in Toledo, Ohio than anywhere else at this time. (110 searches PER DAY at the time of this writing!)
The search engines also report some of the heaviest numbers looking for nurse practitioner jobs in Louisville KY, Dallas TX, and Rockford Illinois. What does that mean to you? Well, the highest competition is going to be where the most applicants apply for jobs. So, unless you have the most to offer, finding a job in these areas will be more difficult. Living at the beach may appeal to you. Finding a less-known Florida location may be easier than searching in Miami or Daytona Beach. If you enjoy working with older people, favorite locations for retirees, such as Boca Raton might be a good choice. You may find a high paying job opening in Detroit Michigan. But will you be happy with the urban lifestyle and the type of patient you may be involved with? Will you be happier in a psychiatric nurse practitioner job in NY, or working as a pediatric nurse practitioner in South Dakota?
