How to Search for the Perfect NP Job

The nurse practitioner job market is rapidly changing and your job search strategy must change and adapt with the market. A few short years ago many NP’s started their job search by combing the ads in either their local newspaper or a professional journal. A small percentage of applicants conducted internet searches.

Times have changed.    Search for Nurse Practioner Jobs in the newspaper

Google Job Search for Nurse Practitioners

Today’s market is almost exclusively online; print ads have dwindled and represent only a small fraction of the number of jobs available. Nurse practitioners must know how to conduct a successful online search. As you are aware, NP’s go by several names and your search should include all the different titles by which we are known. In other words when you search use all the different combinations of terms such as “advanced practice jobs” “APRN”, NP, and “nurse practioner jobs”. Did you catch the misspelling? The word “practitioner” is spelled wrong more often than you think. Try searching both ways.

When searching online, make use of all the resources. Start with Google and put in all the criteria you want in your dream job. For example: “Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner jobs Dallas TX”. If that doesn’t get you the results you want then broaden your search to “Nurse Practitioner TX”. The less specific your search is the more you will find, but you may have to wade through several that don’t meet your requirements to find the one you might have missed in your first search.

I also encourage the use of social networks such as Facebook and LinkedIn, you can “like” or follow employers that are of interest to you. Many recruiters and NP groups also post jobs using social media. Don’t forget if you are active in social media to keep your profile very professional because potential employers may be researching YOU!
